The inevitability of the melting polar ice caps means that the parts of our planet beyond which commercial shipping dare not venture are diminishing. But can seafarers be confident that the sector's search-and-rescue (SAR) communications arrangements are equal to the job of summoning assistance to ships in trouble, wherever in the world an incident may occur? These issues are gaining considerable attention, in part thanks to an ongoing IMO review of the Global Maritime Distress and Safety System (GMDSS).
