Nearly a decade after the introduction of SOLAS Regulation 111/32.3, which mandated that each person onboard must be provided with an immersion suit, this life-saving apparel is undergoing a renaissance. A key factor is the requirement for annual testing of pressure suits after they reach 10 years old, with some shipowners and managers deciding it makes better economic sense to simply replace ageing suits (see last month's IHS Safety at Sea). One company aiming to make a splash in this market is US-based White Glacier, which recently unveiled its Arctic 25 hypothermia protection suit. Using a patented secret combination of non-neoprene materials, the Arctic 25 protects from freezing temperatures, artic winds, and the effects of hypothermia for more than 25 hours without the need for re-inflation. Weighing in at 10 pounds, the Arctic 25 can be put on in around a minute.
