Up close and PPE

The importance of reliable PPE for seafarers is a given, so one should expect all such equipment to be subject to rigorous testing, conform to high standards of reliability, and be designed for use in a real-world marine environment in potentially extreme conditions. There are, however, a number of concerns, not least of which is that although PPE appears in IMO legislature in general terms, specifications tend to be quite basic, leaving the maintenance of standards to local/regional agencies to determine. Furthermore, products constructed for use on land are not automatically suited for use at sea.
