The UK Maritime & Coastguard Agency (MCA) has warned against unap-proved refurbishments of Hammar H20 hydrostatic release units (HRUs). In a safety bulletin, the agency said it has discovered that time-expired H20 units "have been recycled by unauthorised economic operators and re-sold as new, genuine units". In emergencies, these unauthorised units may fail to operate, preventing the proper release of a life raft or Epirb. H20 units are sold by their original manufacturer, CM Hammar, with clear instructions that they be properly disposed of after their service life of two years.
