Singapore port chief stresses safety

Maritime and Port Authority of Singapore (MPA) chief executive Andrew Tan told a maritime safety forum in the city on 5 November that Singapore aimed to further reduce its accident rate. After 13 major incidents in 2011, Singapore's waters have registered eight in 2012, six in 2013, and four so far this year. "But any incident is one too many," said Tan. "The three oil spill incidents early this year served as a timely warning for us. We will continue to work hard to reduce the numbers even more and [this] forum is an important part of that drive." These three collisions occurred within three weeks of 29 January, when COSCO container ship Fei He collided with Cido Shipping chemical tanker Lime Galaxy off Jurong Island.
