There has long been concern for the pristine waters of the polar regions. While protected by the current IMO conventions on safety and marine pollution, it was still clear that the specific environmental conditions of polar waters posed difficulties in the prevention of marine incidents and the responses required. With increasing activity in these locations it was evident that these concerns should be addressed. Early guidelines went some way to ensuring consideration of the specific environment of these areas, but there has been nothing as detailed as the Polar Code and the related amendments to the conventions.
