A container ship that ran aground in the Sunda Strait on 4 December with class-A hazardous cargo and a hole in its hull, had been detained in Australia for repairs earlier this year, it has emerged. Australian Port state control detained the 51,032 gt Hanjin Aqua in the port of Brisbane in September for four deficiencies: two counts of fire safety, and the others relating to propulsion and auxiliary machinery repairs, according to the Tokyo MoU. The South Korean-owned vessel was also found to be in breach of conditions of employment under the terms of the Maritime Labour Convention.
