APL container ship fire extinguished

A fire that raged aboard container ship APL Austria was finally been put out several days after it started. Crew had reported the fire on the evening of 12 February, while the ship was about 55 km southwest of Cape St Francis. The fire started in one of the cargo holds of the Liberian-flagged vessel. The South African Maritime Safety Authority (SAMSA) said on 16 February that the fire had been extinguished and that the vessel's rescue has entered a mop-up phase, during which debris and contaminated water filling up some of its cargo holds would be dispersed.
