"The Norwegian paradise on South America's west coast". That was an over-optimistic description of the Galapagos Islands, which the cash-strapped Ecuadorian government encouraged Europeans to settle in the 1920s, but it worked. Lured by glowing descriptions in a book published by promoter Harry Randall and the promise of free land, 83 Norwegians left Oslo aboard Albemarle on 2 September 1926 for a new life in the Pacific. Most were sorely disappointed.
