1. IHS Markit data shows that container ships, followed by gas tankers and bulkers are the vessel types with the most fitted ballast water systems. However, this does not exceed 41% of the global fleet for container ships. While these numbers appear to be low, the vessel's age plays a vital role in understanding the ballast water system market. Across all types of vessel, with the exception of ferry and ro-ro/car-carriers, the younger the vessel is, the more likely it is to have been fitted with ballast water system. With gas carriers leading the pack with 82% of vessels 5 years old and under already having installed the technology, this breakdown paints a more positive outlook on compliance levels.
