Pam Waldron's article (Creative abandon, SHP July) relating to the Dreamspace fatalities reminded us that lightweight structures do not always look like 'structures' but require, nonetheless, competent structural engineering input, and competent management of the whole process.rnThe Standing Committee on Structural Safety (SCOSS), partly sponsored by the HSE, has been considering lightweight structures as used in the events industry, and has published a report- which can be found at www.scoss.org.uk/ publications.asp- entitled'Risk issues associated with large TV/video screens at public events'. Although concentrating on a specific outdoor construction, most of the points made in the report are valid for all structure types.
