Factory Sees Two Accidents In Three Months

A chipboard manufacturer has been fined more than ￡25,000 following two serious accidents at its Northumberland factory. The first took place on 18 May 2007 at Egger UK's factory in Hexham, when an area supervisor was crushed by a set of steel clamps, which formed part of a chipping machine. While operating the device, he noticed that the cutting head was not travelling properly, and he began to clear the logs from the machine to see if there was a blockage. Finding none, he went inside the machine for a closer look, after one of his colleagues had cut the power to the device. But once the machine was switched off, a set of interior hydraulic pumps lost power and dropped on top of him, trapping him inside.
