Annual health checks are not a panacea

I enjoyed reading Chris Wraith's 'How did I get here?' entry in the September issue and was intrigued to learn how he, like many of us, drifted into health and safety. However, I was concerned that he believes that "annual medicals for all could save lives..." I have published papers in peer-reviewed journals and presented work at national and international conferences showing that, certainly for firefighters, periodic medicals did not contribute to reducing ill-health retirement.
