BEST ACHIEVEMENT IN CONSTRUCTION

The Shard, completed in summer 2012, is the tallest building in western Europe. Construction peaked in 2010, with 1100 workers onsite all concentrated in a very small part of south-east London, The spire forms the top 23 floors of the Shard and comprises 800 separate pieces of steel. Entire sections were assembled off-site and a total of 100 crane lifts were required to raise them into place. During the installation the main priority was to reduce overall risk via an exemplar implementation of CDM through the design, pre-construction and planning processes, and the coordination and engagement of the stakeholders involved.
