IOSH Ireland rural industries section highlighted the risks of quad biking at an event in Portlaoise. Convenient through their manoeuvrability, versatility, speed and low-fuel consumption the hazards posed by these machines are often overlooked. In partnership with the Electricity Supply Board (ESB), experts explained the basic principles of quad bike operation, skill requirements, and carried out off-road demonstrations. Michael Cusack, Rural Industries Section chair, said: "The use of quad bikes in construction, utilities and the agricultural sector continues to grow steadily in Ireland. "Sadly, there is on average one workplace fatality due to their use each year, and countless non-fatal accidents, many of which are unreported. "The most common causes of quad bike accidents relate to speed, lack of personal protective equipment and incorrect operation of the machine. Training is therefore essential for anyone using these vehicles."
