The Health and Safety Authority (HSA) in Ireland, has published a factsheet that highlights the physical risk factors associated with the manual handling of roof panels. Composite roof panels, which are widely used in construction, create the thermal covering that reduces internal temperature loss and provide protection against external temperatures. The HSA's factsheet outlines a number of risk factors, including: 1. the roof panels are too large and difficult to grasp; 2. the panels are too heavy; each man is lifting and manipulating in excess of 30kg while maintaining an awkward posture; 3. the panels are stacked in a location away from the point of use and have to be carried over a long distance; 4. the work can take place while working at height and where there is an uneven work surface; and 5. the activity can involve prolonged physical effort, particularly during the manipulation and rotation of the insulated roof panel to the correct orientation.
