The errors are estimated, which appear in the correction of the sums of measured precipitation due to the errors in the wind velocity measurements at the height of the measuring surface of precipitation gauge related to erroneous estimate of the degree of the precipitation gauge shielding. It is shown that the maximal annual errors characteristic of the polar regions with high wind velocity can be as high as 20% of the corrected sum of precipitation. The analysis of observations is confirmed by calculations using a numerical model. In the central part of Russia, the maximal error ranges within 4-8% depending on the wind speed. The maximal correction error for monthly precipitation sums caused by erroneous determination of the protection parameter can be either greater or smaller than the real total error of precipitation measurements, but it always remains significant and comparable with the total error of correction
