A CAPACITOR PU.LSER FOR PLASMA FOCUS SOFT X-RAY SOURCES

A capacitor pulser to be used as high-voltage, high-current pulse generator (30 kV, 50 kA) for plasma physics (generation of dense transient plasmas), plasma X-ray source and pulse power technology research has been developed. The main components of the pulser are the energy storage capacitor bank and the high voltage, high current switch. The capacitor bank consists of 2 Maxwell high voltage low inductance pulse capacitors (C = 0.2 μF; L = 0.025 μH; U=40 kV). The working voltage is of +30 kV, the maximum energy is of 180 J, the peak current is 50 kA. The capacitor bank is discharged by means of high voltage spark gap switch developed in IPTRD. It is a 3-electrode, high presure switch triggered by field distortion. The trigger pulse is provided by a master spark gap switch of similar design and has a maximum amplitude of -60 kV with about 5 ns rise-time.
