Post-Franco Spanish intellectual and political discourse is engaged in a process of rewriting past national history to connect it with contemporary cultural parameters. The work of Arturo Pérez-Reverte revisits segments of the past that the author views as an ethical inspiration for the present. Un día de cólera provides an illustration, in relation to the popular rebellion against the French occupiers on 2 May 1808. This article studies the ramifications of this epic approach to the past. Benito Pérez Galdós's view of Spanish history is more relativistic and skeptical.
