Crisscrossing industry segments such as mechanical contracting, civil construction and general industrial construction, today's crane service firms are called upon to be experts in a wide range of projects — often in the same day. We took two days to look at what one such crane service firm, RMS Cranes of Englewood, Colo., must do to satisfy a diverse customer base with vastly different needs. RMS Cranes is a 27 year-old outgrowth of precaster Rocky Mountain Structures and today fields a large fleet of conventional truck and crawler cranes and hydraulic truck and all-terrain cranes. Its hydraulic-boom fleet begins with a Grove AT 422 all-terrain crane and moves up the ladder to its flagship 300-ton Grove GMK 6300B all-terrain. Lattice booms operated by the company include a 125-ton Link-Belt HC-238 and go up to the Mani-towoc 999. The company rents its cranes with operators by the hour, week, month and through formal bids. It also has a fleet of trucks and trailers to handle counterweight and rigging mobilization.
