When the 12.5-mile stretch of Interstate 70 passing through Glenwood Canyon in Col- orado was finished in 1992, the highway was hailed as the jewel of the interstate system. More than 30 engineering and design awards, including the prized Outstanding Civil Engineering Achieve- ment Award from the American Society of Civil Engineers in 1993, honored this environmentally sensitive achievement. Forty viaducts and bridges and the 4,000-foot-long Hanging Lake Tunnels carried the interstate through the air, offering spectacular views and preserving the canyon below.
