Mobile lane closures are a common temporary traffic-control technique used in conjunction with slow-moving or intermittent highway maintenance activities in situations where static lane closures are not feasible. In contrast to the latter, which use delineators such as drums, cones or barricades, to close the lane and separate moving traffic from the work area, mobile lane closures typically employ a convoy of two or more trucks equipped with arrow boards and messages to alert and divert traffic around the activity area. Popular due to their ease of setup and portability, mobile closures are used extensively for both daytime and nighttime activities in both urban and rural settings. However, this flexibility comes with risks. The replacement of dozens of traffic delineators with only a few trucks may pose a safety hazard for work crews in situations where drivers are inattentive, confused or distracted. Ultimately, the goal of all traffic-control procedures is to protect the safety of work crews and the traveling public.
