The idea of paying by the mile for using public roads has grown on me. At first I thought it was a good idea to align highway fees with highway use, but I had a hard time imagining how it was going to work. Building an infrastructure of detectors to track each vehicle's movement on every mile of public roadway in the country seems too difficult. Even building a computer map of every mile of public roadway in the country seems like a daunting task. Google is trying to keep theirs up to date, but the endeavor requires constant effort, and I imagine we have all had our problems with streets that don't appear on the map.
