Local Government Note: Road Maintenance By Contract: Maintenance Delivery 1998-2008

During 2008 a series of workshops were held at various venues around Australia (Melbourne, Adelaide, Perth, Brisbane, Townsville and Darwin) to examine the developments in road maintenance delivery over the past 10 years or so. A total of 130 road maintenance practitioners representing State Road Authorities, Local Government, contractors and consultants attended these workshops. The workshops included presentations from ARRB facilitator Paul Robinson, Principal Engineer, Highway Management and Planning, and also from invited speakers from State Road Authorities, Local Government and contractors. Wide ranging discussion was also a feature of the workshops with considerable interaction between the presenters and attendees. The workshops included a review of the status of road maintenance delivery throughout the country over the past 10 years and the individual approaches taken in each State and Territory. Discussion of the changes that have taken place over this time were a key element combined with discussion of the way forward as road maintenance delivery continues to evolve across Australia and internationally.
