.22 CONVERSIONS,WITH A TWIST

I remember decades ago trying a .22 Long Rifle conversion kit in a friend's Colt H-BAR AR-15 rifle. The Colt was new and sexy and had the latest 1:7 rifling twist. He hoped with the conversion kit installed it would be accurate enough for not just plinking but also small game hunting. So we trundled it out on a sunny Maine afternoon and proceeded to put a couple readily available loads through it. Unfortunately, our results were dismal. Accuracy at 25 yards was not just bad, it was a tragedy. Our limited testing at the time led us to believe the Colt's 1:7 twist was at fault. Considering the standard twist rate for .22 LR rifles is a significantly slower 1:16, it seemed a logical conclusion.
