Light glints from the rivets of the P-51D Mustang, a Second World War veteran poised in mid-flight and polished to perfection. Around it, the air is full of other planes suspended from the barrel vault of Feilden Clegg Bradley's new hangar for the RAP Museum at Hendon in north London. Along a viewing balcony, small groups of visitors stand gazing at a hundred years of aviation history. Hendon doesn't share the problem of many other Lottery-funded museums, which don't have enough to show. It has a wealth of aircraft needing protection from the elements in a sympathetic environment. Much of the collection is housed in two dark sheds, so the new Milestones of Flight building is a welcome departure: spacious, daylit and elegant.
