St Mungo's hostel for the homeless is hidden away down a south London back street. The building's former incarnation as a Victorian workhouse is evident in the meanness of its interior spaces; it now houses 45 men in their first step up from life on the street. But in the narrow, tapering back yard is a very different building: a crisp white block with a hint of Corbusier about the enigmatic windows. Known as Cinderella House by its residents because of its transformative power, it offers an environment - a halfway house -where they can prepare for the wider world of holding down a tenancy agreement or even sharing a house.
