Many of Frei Otto's early buildings were pavilions, including the Federal Garden Exhibition in Kassel of 1955 and the German presence at the 67 Montreal Expo (designed with Rolf Gutbrod). These brought him to international attention and allowed him to develop his ideas for the tent roof of the Munich's Olympic Stadium (with Gunter Behnisch). This was followed by a series of daring buildings including the Mannheim multi -hall in 1974 (with Muetschler, Langner, Arup and Happold) and the gymnasium at the King Adbul Aziz University Jeddah (with Gutbrod and Happold). Collaborating with other architects and engineers has always been his preferred working method, and his studio in Stuttgart is a family affair; his wife Ingrid and daughter Christina work with him, most recently on a retrospective of his work that will open at Munich's architecture museum in May.
