Richard Feilden 1951-2005: Champion of standards honoured for his services to architecture

The death of Richard Feilden has taken away one of our most effective champions of architecture and high standards of its practice. Richard was killed by a falling tree in his cherished patch of woodland while clearing a glade as a memorial for his father. The natural world was one of his great passions and central to the architecture of Feilden Clegg Bradley (FCB) which he co-founded with Peter Clegg in 1978. FCB pursued sustainable design well before the phrase became common currency, and community architecture well before consultation and participation became de rigeur in public procurement. And they went on to become a practice of 100 people while retaining their idealism and freshness. The BD Practice of the Year Award 2004 (along with two more awards in the same scheme) particularly thrilled Richard who had a key role as an enthuser and visionary.
