Winchester residents were up in arms when Hampshire council decided to build its Lanterns Children's Centre on a disused playing field that locals had appropriated as their stamping ground. County architect Colin Jackson looked at numerous sites for the 50/50 special needs and mainstream kindergarten, but as the concept design developed and choices dwindled, this leafy and contentious site best fitted the programme. Decision made, the onus was on the architect to produce a building that not only performed, as a school but which addressed the hostility.
