While roofs can be used nowadays as a purely formal compositional device, it wasn't always that way.. The post and beam roof at the ancient Egyptian temple at Karnak may have gone, but the Roman Pantheon with its great dome lives on forever it appears- a text book example to future generations of architects on how the merging of roof and wall structurally is a sure fire way of ensuring your architectural longevity. It goes to show that when medieval masons and engineers got involved, roofs really started to come into their own.
