The headline of the Spending Review was the winding-up of Cabe after its funding from two government departments was removed. RIP- but will some kind of pared-down advisory body emerge from its ashes? London did not do too badly, with extensions to Tate Modern and the British Museum safe, along with the mighty Crossrail. Things were less rosy in south Wales, however, where the ￡13bnSt Athan's Defence Technical College for the armed forces {RIBAJ, March 2010) was scrapped as part of the linked Defence Review. Key provincial transport schemes like the rebuilt New Street Station in Birmingham, the planned'High Speed 2' express railway line, and a road bridge across the Mersey, survived. With a planned new prison dropped,19 DCMS quangos scrapped, and social housing hit hard (although 150,000 new 'affordable' homes are promised over the next five years), there was plenty of downside. English Heritage has a funding cut of nearly a third, but Arb survives.
