Small Does Not Have To Me Simple - and the rnStirling-and-Manser Medal-shortlisted 22 Bateman's Row by Theis and Khan, a compact urban block, is at first encounter a somewhat disorientating mix of uses, cheek by jowl. It's a brand new building that behaves as if it has acquired its various functions over time, rather as the converted industrial buildings around it have done. It is in South Shoreditch, once home to the East London furniture trade, now part of the trendy-bars-and-galleries scene that began years ago in Hoxton and has expanded to fill the whole area. Here - along with some still-functioning industrial units - are noisy basement clubs, recent residential conversions, workspaces and boutique hotels including Shoreditch House and Terence Conran's Boundary Hotel. As if to confirm its refound status, the district now has its own station on the newly reopened East London Line, part of the much-vaunted Overground system.
