In recent years we have seen a proliferation of nature emerge within our cities, colonising our architecture. The surface skin of our new buildings can now breathe with exotic ferns and climbers, trees appear to emerge from roof tops and flowering meadows cloak our roofscapes. These are not new endeavours - generations have captured these elevated planes for cultivation and pleasure - but it does raise new questions of affordability and appropriateness versus the benefits it can bring to our urban existence. Why should we still long to build elevated gardens?
