Cathédrale Notre- Dame de Paris

Notre-Dame de Paris, one of the world's most important and visited cathedrals, caught light on the evening of Monday 18 April. Here it is, photographed by Veronique de Vi-guerie, as the sun sets over the city and fire engulfs the roof. The fire is believed to have started in the attic at around 18:50 local time, spreading rapidly across the upper structures of the building. By the time this image was taken, the spire above the crossing - first built in the 13th century but recreated in the 19th century (see Parting Shot, p74) - had collapsed and firefighters were concentrating their efforts on extinguishing flames in the northern bell tower to prevent further major destruction.
