Dans un marché efficient, le prix spot de l'électricité se situe a l'intersection des courbes d'offre et de demande. La courbe d'offre est déterminée par le co?t marginal de production qui dépend aussi bien de l'énergie primaire que de la technologie utilisée. Optimiser la gestion des centrales électriques n'est pas chose aisée: des paramètres financiers et technologiques décalent sans arrêt l'optimum économique. Et ceci va en s'aggravant avec le développement des sources d'énergie renouvelables intermittentes. Du coté de la demande, l'inélasticité de la consommation résidentielle et le peu de réactivité a la variation des prix des consommateurs industriels restent un problème à la création d'un réel marche. The supply curve is built on fuel and technology-based marginal prices, which are in essence all different, depending on the energy mix. Optimization of power plants is not an easy business: both financial and physical constraints have a substantial impact on prices and shift the economical optimum. And further challenges lie ahead in the future as more and more intermittent renewable source of power should enter the energy mix. But what about the demand curve? Electricity demand is rather inelastic and apart from some big industrial consumers, demand response to power prices is almost zero to this day. There is room for a lot of progress to be made here...
