Uniformity of Response from Large Area Plastic Scintillation Detectors

Using only two 8055 photomultipliers and no light pipes, photomultiplier geometries were found which gave rather uniform response over 1.7 m2 surfaces of single and double sheets of 2.5 cm thick Pilot Y plastic scintillator. The detector response obtained had a standard deviation from the mean of 2.8% for single sheets of Pilot Y scintillator and 3.7% for double sheets.
