High‐voltage ac power supply with variable frequency output from 0.5 to 10 Hz

A special high‐voltage ac power supply has been designed and constructed to supply a voltage with a peculiar waveform to a pair of electrodes sandwiching a dielectric liquid in which some rate process is to be electrically augmented. It consisted of two combined dc‐to‐dc inverters to which the primary voltage was controlled to a prescribed waveform. The output voltage is from 1.5 to 12.5 kV and the maximum current is 0.1 mA. The frequency range is from 0.5 to 10 Hz. The output bears a ripple which is as large as ±15% at a voltage of 12.5 kV. The distinctive features, besides the waveform, lie in that it simultaneously serves the two electrodes with voltages of the same magnitude and of different polarities so that the electric potential at the center of the electrodes is always maintained at the ground level, and that the modification of the output waveform is possible by making a change in the waveform to the dc‐to‐dc inverters.
