JOHN KENNEDY, RELIGION, AND FOREIGN POLICY

John F. Kennedy is the only member of a non-Protestant religious tradition in the United States to become president. Kennedy, raised a Catholic, has received praise from some Catholics for making Catholicism more acceptable, though recently has drawn criticism for legitimating the idea of radically privatizing religious faith. Kennedy identified closely with his faith early on, but when he began his run for president, shifted away from heavy identification with his faith. In his formation of the Peace Corps and policy toward Vietnam, Kennedy's main drives were political rather than religious.
