Private consumption was the main element supporting economic activity in 1997. It rose by around 4.6 per cent, compared with 3.6 per cent in 1996. Sectors such As housedold appliances, clothing and footwear saw the most buoyant growth, Boosted by the windfall paryments from building societies. In the first quarter of 1998, consumer spending rose by 0.9 per cent over the Previous quarter and was 4.9 per cent higher than a year earlier. Spending on Durable goods continued to rise quickly, with expenditure on services also Increasing. However, total spending on non-durable goods fell during this period.
