Incentive-based recycling initiatives are nothing new. The idea is simple: reward people for donating their discards and you will ensure that they want to keep participating. Pay-as-you-throw (PAYT) systems also often carry a market-based incentive structure with recycling encouraged through lower charges for waste collection if you take part in recycling. More creatively, numerous municipal recycling programs in the European Union (especially Great Britain and Norway) and around North America have experimented with special recycling lotteries where citizens receive coupons or prizes if their address is chosen and their recycling container is on the curb.
