Educating the public about recycling - printed materials, advertisements in various kinds of media, door-to-door outreach, etc. — is always a challenge, and appraising the impact of such outreach even more so. A decade ago, Lisa Skumatz and John Green evaluated the impact of several recycling education efforts from around the world. The research for the project covered more than 140 recycling and diversion program features, and consisted of an in-depth review of almost 100 reports and more than half that number of phone interviews with advertising, energy resource conservation and recycling and hazardous waste professionals.
