With the Fat Boy, one MRF operator found it no longer needed to babysit its baler. The Fat Boy baler, made by Indiana-based Balemaster, has a wide-mouth design that virtually eliminates jams. Before KLT Industries bought the continuous-feed, horizontal, auto-tie baler for its Ayer, Mass. MRF, it was relying on a 100-horsepower, single-ram baler that frequently had bridge jams that threatened to shut down production. "Although the unit was fully automatic, the situation got so bad that a full-time operator was required to 'babysit' the machine in order to prevent jams," according to Balemaster. "But even this wasn't enough to keep jams from occurring."
