Editorial

At the beginning of a new editorial project for Research in Economics, our first thoughts go to Guido Cazzavillan, a friend who left us too early after editing the journal for more than a decade with passion and devotion. His memory will remain with us, as will his policy of integrating the work of promising young scholars with that of luminary economists, a valuable legacy on which to build. Planning the future of this journal, it appears useful to go over its past, from the origins to Guido's most recent work. Our journal belongs to Ca' Foscari University, the first business school in Italy and one of the oldest in the world, founded in Venice in 1868 under the initial direction of the classical economist Francesco Ferrara (1810-1900). The journal, however, was founded only in 1947 as the Bollettino del Servizio di Studi Economici of Ca' Foscari, under the direction of Alfonso de Pietri-Tonelli (1883-1952), a follower of Vilfredo Pareto, who dedicated the first issues of the journal to both national and international aspects of economic policy and financial issues. Major contributions of those years included articles by Gino Luzzato (1878-1964), a leading economic historian, and Gino Zappa (1878-1960), a scholar of Fabio Besta (1845-1922) at Ca' Foscari and founder with him of modern accounting.
