Combustion mode changes are a strategy for entering a prolonged calibration map event change to manipulate a desired property. An example is manipulation of exhaust conditions to remove stored particulates from a particulate filter. During this combustion mode, exhaust temperature and oxygen are manipulated to control the removal of the stored particulate. The proposed concept would look at the conditions during a particulate filter regeneration, calculate the absorbed energy capacity from exhaust flow enthalpy and compare it to the particulate reaction rate (which is a function of exhaust gas flow, oxygen, and substrate temperature). If the comparison is positive (the exhaust flow enthalpy can absorb the energy), a combustion mode change to a different point is allowed; if not, the combustion mode is held until the system can safely execute the combustion mode change.
