This disclosure provides a color tint metallographic etchant for improved visual contrast of microstructural constituents and improved accuracy of visual case depth measurements performed on case hardened alloy steel. The chemical composition of this etchant consists of potassium meta-bisulfite and hydrochloric acid in a solution of water. The metallographic sample is submersed in the etching solution for a predetermined amount of time.
