It is desired to improve properties of food drinking straws made of paper. By applying a treatment to the paper surface, different straw performance parameters can be improved. These parameters can for instance be mouth feel (such as not feeling the paper when touching it by the lips or not tasting the paper etc.), air leakage and wet compression strength, i.e., radial compression strength of the paper straw when wet. For improving mouth feel and air leakage, one can envision a solution where the treatment covers the outer surface of the paper straw. Moreover, for improving mouth feel, air leakage and wet compression strength, one can foresee a solution where the treatment covers both outer and inner surfaces of the paper straw. The treatment may be coating of paper and/or paper straw by a process applying a polymer dispersion in a liquid medium, preferably being an aqueous medium. One can imagine suitable polymers to be used for dispersion in the liquid medium to be e.g., over print varnish, particularly acrylic based varnish; and/or thermoplastic polymers, such as polyolefins or polyolefin-based polymers, such as polyethylene, polypropylene, ethylene acrylic acid copolymers (EAA), ethylene-vinyl acetate, and/or ionomers.
