In the oil and gas industry, and particularly within offshore drilling, pressure containing equipment (e.g. wellhead systems and well control equipment) is also used to accommodate large functional and environmental loads. In some cases, it is of interest to accurately measure the load transfer (e.g. tension and bending) through the most highly loaded flanges, to ensure that the capacity limits are not exceeded, as this could cause leakage (loss of fluid pressure integrity) of safety-critical equipment.
