Modern engineering systems, like process and energy systems, transport systems, offshore structures, bridges, pipelines are designed to ensure successful operation throughout the anticipated service life, in compliance with given safety requirements related to the risk posed to the personnel, the public and the environment. Unfortunately, the threat of deterioration processes is always present, so that it is necessary to set up proper maintenance measures to control the development of deterioration and ensure the performance of the system throughout its service life.
