Allen J. Scott will be well known to many readers of this journal because of his enormous contributions to many issues central to regional studies. He has written extensively on economic geography, the cultural economy of cities, and economic development. At around 160 pages of text, divided into eight chapters, this is a relatively short book, but in terms of its scope and ambition it turns out to be a rather big book. In it Scott attempts to synthesize his recent work on a variety of topics in order to re-articulate 'the urban question in a way that is relevant to today's world' (p. vi).
